Anyways, going back to the book, I though the relationships that were explored between characters or between family members was just so honest and realistic. The second novel by the phenomenally talented author of Solitaire, Alice Oseman - the most talked-about YA writer. I think of myself as a fairly funny person, who basically has many other characteristics than being smart, but no one really cared to know that side because most of my school just drank and did drugs a majority of the time haha. The Armistice Day silence has been observed in Britain since 1919, when King George V proclaimed that all locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be. It’s not a bad thing to be called smart, but also, a) that’s a lot of pressure, as we can see Frances dealing with in this book to be head girl and b) it puts people in these boxes where you feel like you can’t branch out, have other interests, and truly be yourself. The concept of school Frances just made me reminiscence all the times that a majority of the people outside of my friends just knew of me because I was smart. I found Frances to be an incredibly relatable character, as in I found her a reflection of myself in high school. Because that’s the problem with dreaming eventually, inevitably, real life arrives with a wake-up call.

Goodreads says it took me a standard length of reading time for YA, however, so clearly this is in my mind and not the book being physically longer.

It was easy to read, but also did such a phenomenal job weaving in aspects of being part of a fandom (definitely younger me went through), mental health issues, the big taboo idea of not going to college *gasp* lol. Three novels from the phenomenally talented Alice Oseman winner of the 2021 YA Book Prize and creator of the beloved graphic novel series Heartstopper, soon to be a major Netflix series. I think a big reason why this book was able to get me out of my slump and why I enjoyed the story as a whole was the writing style. This was a really good book! (and a book I finally finished after being in the middle of so many).
