I agree with you that Parallels graphics engine is much faster than Fusion’s. Maybe the connection problems in my Fusion machine were solvable, but, since it’s working fine with Parallels, I didn’t take the time to find the cause of the problem.

I used Fusion 6 and didn’t experience your problems, although I used it only with Multicharts and on a Full screen set-up.Īctlually I was using Fusion 7 I, wothout any known reason my internet connection was dropping, leaving me with blind open orders: I was attributing the loss of connection to my brokers servers, but it wasn’t, so I switched to Parallels 10 and my problems were solved. We are re-running certain tests on this new build, however, and will post an update if there is a measurable difference in performance. Parallels has just released an update to version 10.0.2 (27712), but it arrived too late for inclusion in these benchmarks. In terms of virtualization software specifics, we tested Parallels 10.0.0 (27675), Fusion 7.0.0 (2075534), and VirtualBox 4.3.14, all of which were the most recent versions available when testing began. There is not always a direct equivalent in each app for options of this nature, but examples include telling the virtualization software to prioritize the guest OS, disabling unnecessary UI effects such as Coherence/Unity, and using a pre-sized virtual disk as opposed to an expanding disk. In addition, all options in each virtualization app to maximize guest operating system performance were enabled.

Our Windows 7 virtual machines were configured with 2 virtual CPUs, 8GB of memory, and 512MB of GPU memory. Both operating systems were updated with all relevant patches as of early September. Personally I find this works very well with Windows 7: (its a mac->windows keyboard layout for Windows).The guest operating system for all tests is 64-bit Windows 7 Professional and, despite the impeding release of OS X Yosemite, our host operating system had to be the officially supported and stable OS X Mavericks. Its worth spending a bit of time setting up your keyboard. A lot of disk checking goes on and the bootloader is involved - can be nasty. If your bootcamp partition goes down the road back to where you were is long and fraught. You can also give VM clones to colleagues so you're all working on identical environments. Its harder to keep a clone of a partition. Also, with image files you can keep a working clone of your VM ready to step in if your windows vm goes down. For me the biggest pain was that Parallels VMs from a bootcamp part can't be suspended and resumed quickly and easily as ones running off an image file. Parallels will work with a bootcamp partition but has some drawbacks.
Re: VMs vs Bootcam - using Bootcamp is an option if you absolutely have to squeeze the last 1-5% performance out of your box, but otherwise the benefit is minimal.
Net enterprise web apps using Visual Studio on a MacPro and also my 13" MBP) and can't imagine working on anything else in any other way :-) aside from problems arising from limited memory (I'd say 4GB minimum for this kind of thing) I've yet to encounter any issues. I've been using Parallels versions 2/3/4/5 to do exactly this for some years now.
